Test & Analyse Password Security

Promoting online safety education, @ 1024kb.co.nz we believe that everyone has the right to a secure password. So we’ve published this simple Password Security Checker for you to examine your own password security level.

Having a secure password protects you from online fraud & data theft when websites that you’ve signed up to have their entire userbase details stolen. Because passwords are not (or really, really shouldn’t be) stored in plain text, but rather they’re saved as an encrypted SHA256 hash. When you log in, your password entry is hashed & compared to the stored SHA256 blob – if it matches, you’re in. For the hackers to monetize the data they’ve stolen, they’ve got to run the password hashes on a decryption engine, which is an expensive & time-consuming exercise. The very first operation though, is to check the hashes against databases of known password hashes – if you’ve used Password123 then your hash will match an existing record & reveal your password. Whoops.

If, however, yours is unique then there’s no match & it’ll be put up against a brute-force attack. This is where complexity & length come into play. A really complex but short password will be cracked relatively quickly – as will a lengthy but simple password. The hackers will have a mathematical break-even point – if the password does not crack within X minutes (which will equate to a monetary value because of electricity costs or VM rental) then it’s time to move on to the next hash, leaving yours as uncracked & still secure.  Your data may be stolen but the thieves are unable to use it.

Password Security Checker examines your input on the fly – see the changes in security level key by key as you type, enabling you to create guaranteed strong, secure passwords. We check against known popular password lists as well as length, character repetition & complexity – feeding back instant input analysis as you type. It also reduces your score for weak points such as character repetition & common word usage.

Use the Password Security Checker to learn how easy it really is to create a long-term strategy of rock-solid  passwords.

The 3 most important factors in secure passwords are length, complexity & uniqueness. A long, random, complex password will hold tight against cracking for far longer than a cracker is prepared to invest the energy & resource required to decode it. Some simple hints – don’t use common words, don’t spell any words out fully, don’t commence with a capital letter & don’t finish with numbers. The least common characters used (found by examining 10,000 common passwords) are the empty space & * asterisk.

Golden Rules Of Password Security

If you’ve ever shared it – it’s not a secure password.
If you’ve ever written it down – it’s not a secure password.
If you’ve ever re-used it – it’s not a secure password.
If it’s less than 10 characters – it’s not a secure password.
If it doesn’t contain Upper & lower case, numbers & special characters – it’s not a secure password.
If you haven’t changed it in the last 12 months – it’s not a secure password.

& if it’s not a secure password – don’t use it as one!!
